Q&A: How can I fix my Dell Laptop since my Wi-FI is not working?

Question by bham_guy331: How can I fix my Dell Laptop since my Wi-FI is not working?
Recently, My Dell Inspiron E1705 Laptop got a virus and would not boot up right. So I took a restoration/reinstillation disk from my sister that came with her Dell Laptop, since I couldn’t find the one that came with mine. I reformatted and Reinstalled Windows XP. Windows works fine, but my w-fi isnt’ working. I press the On button and the light doesn’t light up and it doesn’t detect my wireless connection. SO I tried to plug the ethernet cable directly into the back and it doesnt recognize that either. So basically my laptop will now not connect to the internet. The instillation disk from her computer was for Windows XP Home Edition. My laptop was equipped with Windows XP Media Edition. How can I fix the wi-fi on my laptop and connect to the internet again?

I am a dell tech, and you need the drivers. Located at support.dell.com and click on “im looking for drivers and downloads” type in your service tag located at the bottom of your computer and download and install in this order, chipset, audio, video, network. and it should be working fine.

Sounds like to me that all of your drivers are missing for your computer. You need to find the driver installation disc that came with your computer. If your not able to locate that disc, use a different computer to download all the drivers for your computer and burn them to a disc.

Well you now have Home Edition as well. That’s not a problem though.

Find the manufacturer and model of your network card. Then use your sister’s laptop and find the correct drivers. Download them to a flash drive or CD or whatnot. Then install them onto your computer from whatever removable media you choose.

ok…well u see these dell’s can be tricky when you reformat and reinstall…did you partition your harddrive before you reinstalled (if you dont know what that means it means to back up ur harddrive for access after u reinstall)
if you did the files could be messed with
    …but
what i would check is in the control panel …go to performance and maintenence, system, click the hardware tab, click device manager, look for network…wireless open the expandable menus and such right click look at properties…you need to see if the drivers are installed and functioning…if not…try to reinstall the drivers in the properties

if this doesn’t work you could always refer to opening the laptop…there is a little door on the laptop where the wireless card is located..it will probably be closed with 1 or 2 little screws…if u open it u can disconnect it from the computer and remove it…check it for damage and blow on the terminals of the computer and the care and reinsert..make sure it is is tight because if all the terminals are not touching it may not work….

another option is to play around with the computer…but what people don’t seem to understand is that the second you turn on windows computers to internet…they get screwed unless you have good protection…but norton internet security 2008…that is the best…that is the only program i actually trust to have on my computer before i connect to the internet with a windows since there are millions of windows viruses and half of them get through the second you plug in the cable unless you are protected…
but you could get norton and then disable windows firewall (its a piece of crap and dont do anything besides annoy you anyway) and play around with IP settings
try to reinstall the drivers on the network card and then go to Run>type CMD
    then type

    ipconfig

you should hopefully see a bunch of numbers such as IP address
    Default Gateway
    Subnet
    etc
etc..and numbers besides 0.0.0.0 next to them

    if not type in next

    ipconfig/release

    wait for it to load

    then type

    ipconfig/renew

this will release your IP address and such and give you a new refreshed one
    they after this
    type

    ping yahoo.com

read what it says and hopefully it will say ping successful with no delay
other than that the only advice i can offer is call dell or buy a mac
