Most all laptops have VGA and/or HDMI outputs. Connecting to an external monitor shouldn’t be a problem.

On most laptops there is a key combination you have to press to switch the video output mode to an external device. This is usually done by pressing Function (Fn) together with one of the F keys at the top of your keyboard. Look for a logo that has something to do with monitor/screen and just try to press it together with the Fn key.

1: Plug in the new monitor
2: find the function button (eg. F5) that has a monitor and a computer in blue on it
    3: Press Fn+(button mentioned in step 2)
4: It should have switched it now

You need either a VGA or DVI cable (you can find one online or in an electronics store). Connect this cable from your laptop to an external monitor. But make sure your laptop has a VGA or DVI jack before you go an buy the cable. You can always do an image search to find out what these jacks/cables look like. Hope this helps!

you may be able to do it by connecting to display and then shutting the laptop. most do it automatically. the connect a mouse and keyboard and you can either use it that way or set it to use the external monitor by default so you can open the laptop and use its keyboard and mouse.
