What type of portable lighting equipment should I invest in?

Question by Crystal N: What type of portable lighting equipment should I invest in?
I am a freelance photographer and am ready to purchase some lighting equipment. I have been using natures light, but in the winter I do more indoor shots. However, I travel to the clients homes, so I need something portable.

I use Lowel Tota-lights (750 watt lamps) with umbrellas

Those and a portable background stand

I also take a 42 inch multi-reflector (black, white, gold and silver)

Both from B&H Photo

You can make backgrounds or buy them at your local professional camera store.

I would think any freelance photographer would know how to set up a simple lighting grid… 2 lights, 2 umbrellas and a power pack… not exactly difficult for a freelance photographer with your experience.

I do portrait photography on location and use Photogenic for my main lights and Bowens for my backlights. They are pricey but worth it. They last a long time, at least for me. You should get a padded case to keep them safe given you are traveling with them. You’ll need a couple light stands. A soft box or umbrella should be used to diffuse the light in order to get a nice and evenly lit portrait like you might get on an overcast day using available outdoor light. You’ll need to be sure you have a power source and extension cords unless you plan to use a portable battery.
