How can I protect my laptop from viruses etc?

Question by MrWiseGuy: How can I protect my laptop from viruses etc?
I recently bought a new laptop and I want to look after this one. I have got McAfee Security Centre, and I am going to defrag my laptop every couple of weeks. Is there anything else I should be doing? Any other software I should download to keep my laptop safe from malware or spyware etc?

first thing you can do is throw that McAfee away. I rather get virus on my computer than have McAfee. It slows down your computer so much and it never detects any threat when there is clearly one. I recommend turning the auto-update for your laptop on and get Norton installed on your laptop. Defrag does nothing to remove viruses. Malwarebyte and Spybot are both great programs you can download for free. Just make sure you don’t click on random links and only download things from websites that you trust. That’s the best way you can protect yourself from virus. Also clear your cache and cookies from your browser once every month to get rid of those tracking cookies or adware. That’s the best advice I can give you. good luck!

You shouldn’t have gone with McAfee!
    Anti-Virus: Avast or Avira
    And turn on your Firewall.
    Malware: Malwarebytes
    Spyware: Superantispyware
    Hope this helps! ;)

I can suggest good programs but two of them do not protect because they are free. You need to pay for the protection and doesn’t conflict with your McAfee.

Malware can prevent the running processes of your security programs and there isn’t one product currently available that has 100% detection and prevention so it’s a good idea to beef up your prevention.

I got Malwarebytes Pro and for that I get Protection Module plus IP Blocker, no subscription and dead cheap. Some people get SUPERAntiSpyware Pro instead of Malwarebytes Pro, either of them is very good and won’t conflict with your McAfee real time protection.

Another free program which doesn’t have real-time protection but it prevents unwanted installations and it’s very effective to have – SpywareBlaster

i’m assuming it’s a pc and not a mac? coz macbooks are less prone to viruses and malware.
but if you have a pc, and you use the computer to surf the net then try using sandboxie (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Browser-Tweak/Sandboxie.shtml) to isolate your hard drive from your webbrowsing.
also, only use legal software and paid-for anti-virus software which has better protection than the free version.
also as much as possible, try not to transfer files from other computers to your laptop, wheher via usb etc.

    Hey, ignore the advertisers.

    McAfee does it all:)
-CPU usage isn’t an issue if you have over 60 GB.

However having Malwarebytes along is always recommended.
ect Spybot Search & Destroy also, if your a paranoid one.

You could also have the free Glary Utilities to clean and even defrag your registry. It can also remove junk and temporary files that you don’t need. It has other utilities that are very useful. I’m sure you’ll like it.

http://www.avast.com go there and download the home or professional edition! youll be good too go! ITS FREE!
also, go too www. download.com where you should locate MALWAREBYTES ANTIMALWARE! its the hottest tool available and ITS FREE! you should always keep this tool and never delete! it takes awhile on the first scan as it locate and eliminate all kinds of malware/adware and tracking cookies you never knew even existed on your computer! after the first run you will simply have too run it for 8 mins too keep you computer free of worms, viruses etc… this tool is a must! a lot of folks do not realize that the avg computer user in the area of 68% runs into malicious dangerous viruses, worms, adware etc.. the avg antivirus programs are not enough these days, you should download both of these programs and use them as a COMBO in your quest for computer security! promise! i had AVG, and many others, but this combo is 2nd too none! and it has a resident shield scanner that picks up on viruses before you even open the window!

go for it! THEYRE BOTH FREE AND RANKED AS THE TOP 1 OR 2 IN INTERNET SECURITY!

McAfee is a good anti-virus, never got a virus with it
The best way to protect your computer against viruses is to keep your UAC up to full blast always, run regular virus scans, only download programs you trust and please, don’t download limewire or frostwire, people get rich clearing out viruses they cause..
Yet another way, is only use YOUR antivirus. Don’t trust any but McAfee or the one you choose to download that more than 1 or 2 people reccomend. Some are the virus themself.

Keep your anti-virus and spyware program updated at all times and run full scan daily or at least thrice a week for best results. Check out http://usefulinfo-comp.blogspot.com/ for more information.

Well, you should first think of what steps to take. Here are the things you need:

    An Antivirus
    An AntiSpyware
    A Firewall
A separate scanner tool (to assure better protection).

And, I would always prefer free, because these days, even best paid software have not been able to beat free software.

    I prefer:
    Antivirus: Avira Free
    Anti-Spyware: Super Antispyware
    Firewall: Zonealarm Firewall

Download four of these and your computer will be very very safe. The following site contains all the details about the software and their download links .

    Hope that helps!
