What are these slots on my laptop computer?

Question by tonic4268: What are these slots on my laptop computer?
on the left side of my new gateway 6816 I have two slots with something in each. one is a smaller slot with a small plastic chip inside, with “SD/MMC/MSxD” engraved by it.
The larger slot has nothing engraved by it and another plastic piece is already inserted into it, but this second plastic piece is clearly nothing more than plastic, while I can’t determine if the plastic piece in the smaller slot is solely composed of plastic.
What are these slots for? What can go in them?

if the large slot is probably the PCMCIA(about 2 inches wide) slot many things can go in there(like blue tooth recievers, wireless recievers, tv cards…)

the small one with SD/MMC/msxD is also for many things like memory cards from phone, digital cameras and many other things

that plastic piece is just to keep the dust out while nothing is in the slot my HP has it too
