Q&A: Does a virus cause a laptop to overheat?

Question by Vicxyz: Does a virus cause a laptop to overheat?
My laptop overheats rather often, usually at least once per day. Sometimes, I think I’m just opening too many things at once, but do viruses have anything to do with overheating?

No.

A virus can not affect hardware.

No, a virus does not cause a laptop or even a desktop to overheat.

Laptops generally over heat to dust build up or not having enough space for air flow. Also having a laptop left on 24/7 can make it more prone to overheat.

In some cases laptops overheat if the cooling/heating component of the laptop is going bad and needs to be replaced.

It could… depending on the virus. Some viruses try to infect other computers so hard that they work your computer, which would cause increased heat. But more likely than the virus scenario is that maybe your laptop is dusty inside. Dust settles on the microchips, and it acts as an insulator; it keeps the heat in. My advice is to go get some “canned air” and blow it into the fan vents and any other openings in the chassis of your laptop before you worry about a virus.
