Portable Hardrive computer scan?

Question by D-Beau: Portable Hardrive computer scan?
My older laptop’s screen no longer comes on. The computer still does, but I’m not able to see anything. I bought a new computer, but I want everything on my laptop. I was wondering if there’s anyway (without getting it fixed) I could plug in my passport harddrive and scan all files on to it. That would be great. Thanks. And if not, is there any other possible way I could get all my files from that computer onto my new one? Any special usb device that could transers all my files onto the new one?

Yes there is. If the hard drive is still good, then you can buy a hard drive enclosure.
Put the laptop hard drive in it and then use the old hard drive as an external hard drive using a usb port. You can get these thing for like up to 25 dollars for a basic one with no special features.

But you will need to know how to take out the laptop hard drive. Most laptops use a 2.5″ hard drive with a sata connection, however older laptops uses a pata (aka EIDE) connection. So I would check out what connection the old laptop use for the hard drive.

So long as the old hard drive is still working there are several ways you can do this.

You can use a usb/usb connection – see
    http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/248 then http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=usb+transfer+cable

You can use a crossover ethernet cable and use the file transfer wizard – http://forums.techguy.org/networking/199558-solved-transfer-files-using-ethernet.html

Personally, I’d simply remove the old drive and use an IDE / SATA to USB adapter on the new computer. Te new computer will simply see the hard drive as an external drive – http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=ide+sata+usb+adapter
