Cyclic Redundancy Check, Western Digital Hard Drive, Can’t Open?

Question by Johnny B: Cyclic Redundancy Check, Western Digital Hard Drive, Can’t Open?
I bought a 500GB WD External Hard Drive back in May of 2007 and am trying to transfer my files into my new WD Portable Hard Drive (640GB) When I initially bought my hard drive, the OS i was using was Windows XP. Later, I got a laptop with Windows Vista, then I upgraded to Windows 7. Ever since I upgraded to Windows 7, I can’t ALWAYS access my hard drive. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. When It doesn’t, it says that i need to format my hard drive in order to use it, i press “no” and then sometimes it opens after that. When it doesnt, it says that there is a “Data Error” with the problem being a Cyclic Redundancy Check. It happens on other computers (Windows XP OS too.)

How do I fix this so I can transfer my files to my new hard drive? (Or even use my files!)
