i bought a laptop chillpad once. It had 3 fans and was powered by one usb connector. It served me wel for 5 months, after that i switched to desktop and gave it to my friend, who used it for another year. its a pad, and you put your laptop over it. the fans suck up air from the bottom and push it up agaist the bottom of your laptop. then the air escapes from the sides of the gap between th pad and the laptop. pretty simple principle. you can improve its preformance by taking out the back panels of your laptop to expose the ram and the cpu heatsinks/pipes (like i did XD, i even wrapped some aluminum foil to places, put ice packs over the laptop to used the crab outta my 5 year old overclocked toshiba XD)

well it is a little more harmful than an optical mouse that is connected to your laptop, which is not alot to worry about. the less fans or the diameter of the fans, the less the harm.
but you should not use it while running on battery, because the pad draws power outta your computer. you should also take the battery out of the laptop when running on cord.
well now, is it effective? i use speedfan to monitor my cpu temperature and i think i got the following figures.

chillpad off --- idle temperature 46C, temperature rose quickly after load, fan started at 60 C to bring it down to 50 then stopped, cycle continued

chillpad on ---- 35 C, and the laptop took much longer to reach 60C and went down fast

therefore, MY chillpad surely helped ME, your results might be different

If you are talking about an external laptop cooler device, like a fan platform that sits under it, yes it is very worth it. And it is likely to help tremendously. To answer your other questions, It takes hot air from under the laptop with a fan, and blows it out the front, or back. And no, it does not damage the system, and can help it beyond belief. It cools my sister's freakish laptop temperature of 100°C (The boiling point), to a more manageable 75°C.

Happy no-more-leg-burns!

Does it over heat or run hot. All laptops run hot. Make sure the vents are not blocked. do not use your laptop sitting on your lap as this blocks any vents on the bottom. A cooler is good but make sure it has its own power supply as well as USB and the fans are quiet.

A laptop cooling pad can be useful if the laptop is getting so hot it either shuts down or you cannot touch the bottom of it. Many times this is caused by not having enough air circulating around the laptop.

These cooling pads work in two ways. The first is that is give the laptop space between the bottom and the surface it is sitting on. The second is by using fans in the cooling pad it circulates this air around, and effectively cools the laptop.

Of course these devices will not damage your system. They are designed to help. If your laptop is constantly overheating, then that could damage your system over time.

The cooler device acts as a heat sink to draw heat away from the laptop. Unfortunately, some models get hot enough to cause burns if held on a lap. Your laptop should be on a hard surface that allows air to flow under and around it.
