i have a laptop i bought in the US and i am trying to connect to a security enabled wireless network in swizterland. it connects and then i enter the network key (which i presume is correct) it then says that it is acquiring the network address and this is as far as it gets. could there be compatibility issues ???

There’s no compatibility issues.
It’s all the same.
I’m guessing the network key is incorrect.

It’s unlikely a compatibility issue as most network devices across the globe use the same RFC standards. Try checking the type of security used on the WLAN and make sure you have the correct security configured on your laptop. If you have the correct security protocol selected, then make sure your password/key are correct.
