My USB flashdrive has a problem, what is wrong with it? It will not allow me to open folders with music in it?

Question by EddyD: My USB flashdrive has a problem, what is wrong with it? It will not allow me to open folders with music in it?
To save space on my pc, I have been transferring all my music and sound files into a folder labelled “Music” on my USB flash drive/memory stick. While it was always handy and pretty neat to carry around all my fave music on a little, portable and removable storage gadget, I’m glad I did this because when a virus struck, my pc lost everything on it and the computer had to be fixed.
When I got my computer back, I thought I would listen to some music, but when I put my flash drive into the computer and opened it – I noticed that my music folder was now not a folder any more. Instead of showing a folder labelled “Music” it showed a different icon, something that looked like a box with a disc in front of it (imagine an icon that suggests it is a setup icon). The file was still labelled music, but apparently was an “exe” file – an application. I never saved/downloaded a file called music – this was my folder I saved my stuff into, which had morphed somehow into a whole different file type!

I attempted clicking on the file, but nothing happened. Right clicking it and trying to open it any other way did not give me ANY results either. The file just sat there, and did nothing.

I tried another USB flash drive that also contained a folder with music and sound files, but only got the same results.

Can anyone please suggest or explain what happened? I didn’t have this problem with the home computer prior to the virus attack, but now with the new pc, I can’t open ANY music folders stored on removable discs (flash drives).

Excluding music folders stored on flash drives, my pc will allow me to open other folders that contain documents, videos and pictures.
I tried the flash drive on a different computer – “Music” folder appeared as a folder alright, but as a faded icon.
* How do I know it was an .exe file? Right clicked and went into properties because I wanted to know what the heck the icon meant. It came up as “.exe” under type. And under properties it said “Application” not File Folder, which is what you’d expect on Windows.
* I reformatted windows, and had it reinstalled too… but no luck. Same problem each time. The virus/trojan idea scares me a bit – can viruses really get onto them?

I suggest you install the latest drivers for your device. For some reason the computer is not correctly identifying your devices file system.

Since I find that very unlikely, the virus may have gotten to your flash drive as well.
