Assuming the laptop is Vista, I’d say AVG is decent if you only want the basics of basics. – McAFee has a few versions that are free for Vista but can slow down your laptop considerably.
I just brought “I Trend Mirco” for $ 94 AUS and it’s decent enough.
You’ll get lots of answers to this I’m sure! Personally I use Avast – take a look at http://www.techsupportalert.com/best_46_free_utilities.htm#2
for some ideas and download locations.
i’d suggest Avast
http://www.avast.com
the download link is:
http://www.download.com/Avast-Home-Edition/3000-2239_4-10019223.html?part=dl-AvastHome&subj=dl&tag=button&cdlpid=10019223
Some people will say AVG, but AVG anti virus has poor detection rates.
AVG Free or Avast should do the job for you. I find AVG a bit lighter on the resources except when its running a scheduled scan or updating the virus definitions. Avast has no scheduled scans and scans constantly but uses a bit more in the line of resources.
AVG Free: http://free.grisoft.com
Avast: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
If you want free Antivirus the two top ones are AVG Anti-virus and AVAST Anti-virus(look below for the links).
I use avg http://free.grisoft.com/ I have also used avast, http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html I have had good luck with both. Good Luck

So many companies trying to make money by selling you products to keep your computer safe and clean, all of which are freely available.
Hope this helps.
I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from the following linkhttp://www.computeractive.co.uk/. On the home page select downloads and then the appropriate category.I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps
