Question by Alice In Wonderland: Question about a new laptop and a warranty? help?
I just bought a Compaq presario laptop with 3GB of ram, and a 250GB hard drive for $ 550 and i was wondering whether a service plan/warranty from future shop thats 3 years and $ 250 is worth the money or not. its a really good plan and covers everything but physical damage but its also really expensive. so is it worth it to get the plan or is the manufacturers 1 year warranty good enough? i dont know how much laptops need repair as i’ve never had one. Thanks to anyone who answers.

Here is my advice…Go with the one year warranty. I bought a 3 year warranty for my laptop for about the same price. I have kept it well maintained. I recently replaced the AC adapter which I could have found on ebay for very cheap. I have had nothing else that has needed replacement. It is your personal preference whether to get it or not.

I used to buy service plans on my laptop. Whjen it took Best Buy 6 days to figure out that the CD drive was bad (the complaint I brought it in with), I stopped buying service plans. It’s not the Geek Squad, it’s the Greek Squad – computer technology is Greek to them.

Whether Future Shopp has competent technicians or not is something I can’t tell you, but the servicce plan is only as good as the technicians behind it.

If they can’t fix it it goes back to the manufacturer – and HP/Compaq can’t find any problem with a computer not under its own warranty (that’s who found nothing wrong with my dead CD drive). Or won’t – same thing to the consumer.

But figure that, service plan or no service plan, a laptop will last about 3 years. (And be very careful plugging in and unplugging the charger from the laptop. The single most common laptop problem is that the stress disconnects the connector from the motherboard. Some manufacturers cover that, others consider it due to your excessive force, and you’re left with a $ 100-$ 200 repair bill – IF you get it repaired immediately. If you wiggle the connector to make it work you eventually destroy the motherboard. Then it doesn’t pay to fix it, because a new one costs about the same.

I just came across a site that sends you a laptop for free! I’m ordering mine right now, it’s a Sony VAIO and it looks really hot!
