Be advised that Norton is the worst anti-virus product ever made. Norton is more like a virus and a huge resource hog. It is notoriously bloated and takes forever to perform full systems scans. The software will do more harm to your PC than good and when you try to remove it, it leaves behind over 375 traces in your registry files/folders and subsystem. This software is so awful you have to download a removal tool to get the majority of the entires out of your machine. You are much better off with a free anti-virus product.
I have researched all anti-virus products and the best anti-virus protection is Kaspersky. Kaspersky is the best all-round anti-virus program. NOD32 is just as good if not better, it runs faster and has less software conflicts but may be more difficult to use.
The most popular free anti-virus programs (AVG and Avast) have poor detection rates (82.82%, 87.46% respectively).
Recent tests prove Kaspersky and NOD32 are better than the best sellers Norton and McAfee (av-comparatives.org).
Trend Micro Antivirus is a viable alternative if you’re having a lot of trouble with software conflicts. Trend Micro rounds out the top three. If you want a free anti-virus Avira has higher detection rates than AVG or Avast! (94.26%).

I’ve had my laptop with Vista for a year now, with Mcafee, and have NEVER had a problem.
the best plan would be to sell it and get a mac .
I would NOT go with Norton or Macafee, since both slow down system performance. AVG (Grisoft) and Zone Alarm (Checkpoint) make excellent suites which do not slow down system performance. There are free products, but none performs as well as the paid suites.
The “detection rates” discussed above are not for the paid versions of these suites, both of which have 94% or better rates of protection in recent tests.
Avast is my fav – FREE too!
I have been using it for years and have it on all my numerous computers.
Norton is the worst in my opinion – sucks up resources and takes control of your system.
(i use Avira, and i got this answer from a question i asked)
1. AVG Free
a. A simple interface (easier to use than Avast! and Avira)
b. Can detect about 82.82% of viruses
Cons: low virus detection
2. Avast!
a. Real-time protection
b. It has an option to delete a virus once found
c. Can detect about 87.46% of viruses.
Cons: Too many icons and confusing user interface
3. Avira AntiVir
a. It can detect malware better than Avast and AVG
b. umbrella icon
c. Can detect about 94.26% of viruses
Cons: A very sluggish update
